Injuries and deaths of children associated with child safety seats and passenger-side air bags have been reported. Parents, therefore, should be reminded that the safest place for any infant or small child when riding in a car is buckled into a safety seat or seat belt in the back seat. This is true whether or not the car is equipped with a passenger-side air bag.

Any child who rides unrestrained or incorrectly restrained in the front seat of a vehicle with a passenger-side air bag is at risk for serious injury or death if the air bag deploys. Unfortunately, as many as 35 percent of American children ride unrestrained.

Passenger-side air bags should not be considered a replacement for a seat belt. In 1994, air bags in conjunction with the use of a seat belt, saved an estimated 374 lives.
