Hello. I have had two miscarriages in the last six months. The second one resulted in a D&C on October 26th. I still have not menstated and my doctor has put me on Medroxy progesterone. My question is can we start trying after I get my period even though it was brought on by medication? Both my miscarriages were early in the pregnancy. Thank you -- Kelly

Dear Kelly:

Although I don't have a complete clinical history from you I can begin a reasoning process that could help us to feel more comfortable that you are doing the right thing.

Assuming that you are a young wife (21-35 y/a), with a normal body weight and body mass index, it would not be unreasonable to attempt pregnancy without further testing. If your period had to be induced with medroxyprogesterone acetate tablets, I would conclude that your ovulatory cycles are perfectly back to normal yet. Thus, you may need to wait until you resume normal cyclicity before you attemtp a pregnancy.

If you smoke, drink alcohol, or have an increased body weight, please adjust to a stringent normal life style.

According to statistics, your likelihood to have a normal viable pregnancy is very high in a subsequent pregnancy.

Sincerely,

Jaime Vasquez, M.D.
