Sometimes natural disasters occur with no warning. In the wake of public health threats and emergencies like hurricanes, tsunamis, blizzards, tornadoes, acts of terrorism, and the threat of pandemic influenza, we are all starting to understand that being prepared for any type of emergency is important.

So what do you need to prepare for an emergency?

1. An Emergency Kit

If disaster strikes your community, you might not have access to food, water or electricity for some time. Having an ample supply of clean water is a top priority in an emergency. A normally active person needs to drink at least 2 quarts (a half gallon) of water each day – however, as a chronic kidney disease (CKD) patient you must follow your health care team’s diet and fluid recommendations. It is very important you follow these recommendations during an emergency.

You will also need water for food preparation and hygiene. Store at least an additional half-gallon per person, per day for this.

Store at least a 3-day supply and consider storing a two-week supply of water for each member of your family. And don’t forget to take your pets and service animals into account!

2. Make a Plan

Create a family disaster plan including a communication plan, disaster supplies kit, and an evacuation plan. Knowing what to do is your best protection and your responsibility.

3. Be Informed
It is important to listen to TV or radio to understand whether the authorities wish you to merely remain indoors or to take additional steps to protect yourself and your family.

And call 911 (inside USA) for immediate help.
