Keeping Feet Fresh

  • Wash your feet regularly and dry them well - especially between the toes.
  • Choose socks made of natural fibre like cotton.
  • Change your socks and/or tights regularly.
  • Make sure your shoes are roomy and comfortable.
  • Use a special insole to absorb sweat and beat odour - available from your local pharmacy.
  • Smelly feet may be helped by special foot deodorants - take a look at your local pharmacist
  • Give your favourite shoes a rest - don't wear them all the time
  • Treat yourself to a foot bath at the end of a long day. Use cool water and follow up with a foot massage using your favourite foot lotion - peppermint lotion or tea tree oil work wonders.
  • Keep your feet healthy. Fungus infections like athletes foot will make you itch between the toes, while sore and cracked soles may be due to a type of eczema. Get any unusually sore or itchy areas checked out by your doctor.

  • Finding the Right Support

    Walking shoes are designed specifically for the heel-to-toe roll your foot makes each time you take a step. Some manufacturers make special models for individuals who may turn their foot either inward or outward -pronation or supinatien, respectively.

  • The lower parts of your legs and your feet carry the weight of your body and are strained if you are overweight or if you stand (but do not walk) for long periods.

    Varicose veins are a common problem in the legs, especially among women. These twisted, distended veins can be painful.

    Swollen ankles may be caused by being on your feet for a long time in warmer weather or by sitting with your feet tucked under your chair (such as during a long plane trip).

  • To keep skin clear & free of problems, eating right plays a big part. Certain skin problems like acne & eczema can be seen as an attempt by the body to get rid of toxins through the skin. We can help our body do just that by making sure our kidneys & liver function well, not overburdened with the job to eliminate toxins from the body.

    Drink lots of water (filtered if possible) throughout the day, at least 8 glasses or 2 litres & eat large portions of fibre daily. Go easy on sugary foods & drinks. Learn to love fruits & vegetables.

  • Backache

    During pregnancy ligaments become softer and stretch to prepare you for labour. This can put a strain on the joints of your lower back and pelvis which can cause backache. As the baby grows, the hollow in your lower back may increase and this may also cause backache.

    To avoid backache:

    avoid heavy lifting;

    bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting or picking something up from the floor;

    if you do have to carry something heavy, hold it close to your body;

    move your feet when turning round to avoid twisting your spine;

  • It is a well established fact that better cardiovascular health gained by regular exercise reduces your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol levels. Now, new research suggests that regular cardiovascular exercise might benefit your brain as well. Two separate studies published last September in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) report that walking regularly may help preserve mental sharpness.
