Gingivitis, Periodontitis:
Red and swollen gums, possibly with bleeding. Gums may recede, exposing more of the tooth. There may also be bone loss around teeth roots. Poorly controlled diabetes leads to a much higher incidence and severity of these problems.
Good News:
In one study, adults with diabetes who got regular dental care (ultrasonic scaling and curettage, or gum trimming) and took oral doxycycline (a systemic antibiotic) saw nearly a 10 percent reduction in their mean blood glucose levels (HbA1 c) after three months of treatment.
Xerostomia:
Dry mouth:
Researchers now think that diabetes affects the part of the saliva glands that aids both the uptake and excretion of saliva. Dry mouths are more vulnerable to opportunistic infection such as candidiasis.
Good News:
There are various saliva substitutes and stimulants that keep the mouth moist, which helps prevent can-didiasis and other complications.
Candidiasis:
A white fungus that grows over the lining of the mouth and is associated with smoking, denture use and poor glycemic control in adults.
Good News:
Antifungal agents are available to treat the disease. They include lozenges and oral suspensions of nystatin, and systemic remedies such as fluconazole, ketoconazole and itraconazole.
