Skin problems range from the simple to the complicated including serious infections and cancer of the skin. The skin also reflects a person's state of health in many ways including nutritional status. The most common form of skin problems, dry skin, or xeroderma, does not reflect any underlying illness; instead, the skin loses some of the lustre that confer a pliable feel and appearnce. Some people experience improvements of dry skin conditions by boosting there intake of vitamins A and C, the B_group vitamins and zinc. Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disorder, causing redness, pimples, pustules, and streaks due to dilated blood vessels. A diet low in fat and animal protein may lessen symptoms. Omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in oily fish and evening primrose oil, help to reduce inflammation. Inflammation and scaly rash of psoriasis can be reduced by an intake of omega-3 fatty acids, and reducing consumption of animal protein. As a general plan of diet for healthy skin, consume plenty of yellow fruits and vegetables for vitamins A and C; legumes, whole-grain or fortified breads and cereals, eggs, and dark green vegetables for the B vitamins; seafood, poultry, and grains for zinc; oily fish and evening primrose oil for omega-3 fatty acids. Cut down on animal proteins, hot spices, and any other foods that aggravate the skin problems.
Acne is more common in the young, but almost everybody can experience an occasional flare-up. To treat this condition, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins A and C; whole grains and cereals for B vitamins and zinc; lean meat, poultry and fish for zinc. Eczema is an itchy, scaly rash often caused by sensitivity to foods, chemicals and other triggers. Foods that trigger eczema are eggs, dairy products, seafood, walnuts. A food diary may help to pinpoint the offending items.
Researchers believe that a diet rich in vitamin B6 offers some protection against sensitivity rashes. Good sources include vegetable oil, oily fish, legumes, brown rice, wheat germ and leafy green vegetables. Herpes zoster is another skin disease which is reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that causes chicken pox. Beneficial nutrients include vitamin E found in olive and other vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and wheat germ from vitamin E, and also fresh fruits and vegetables for anti-oxidants and bioflavonoids.
