Healthy bones and joints are fundamental to a healthy, active life. Certain foods and nutrients contain the raw materials from which bones are composed and therefore can contribute to bone growth in childhood and continued bone and joint health in adult life. Other foods such as sugar can do the opposite, depleting the mineral content of bones and increasing the risk of bone weakness and thinning in later life.

A healthy, active, old person does not need any special diet. Familiar foods and eating habits are very important to their happiness and well-being. It is unwise to suggest changes unless there are very compelling reasons. There are, however, various circumstances which bring about changes in old people's eating habits, gradually leading to poor nutrition and a decline in health.

Your order your favourite meal at your local restaurant, but do you really know what you're eating? Diners dramatically underestimate kilo joules and fat in many popular dishes, say researchers at the University of Arkansas. But when given the nutritional statistics of menu items, most make healthier choices. If nutritional info isn't available, ask your server for lighter choices. "If consumers demand healthier alternatives," says study coauthor Elizabeth Creyer, "the restaurant industry will respond."

Honey is set fair to be the new medical champion in hospitals. Latest research claims that it could help combat the potentially lethal rise in antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are proving notoriously difficult to treat when they appear in infections. By studying the way bacteria protect themselves from attack by forming slimy clumps, the scientists have discovered that honey may be an effective new weapon,in breaking up the microbes' defences. The researchers involved are from the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC), in the UK.

Tobacco use tops the list of controllable risk factors.

The holiday season that is now upon us is a time for festivity, and usually of overeating. But the rampant consumption of sugar that marks this time of year is nothing to celebrate.
In fact, this seasonal upsurge in sugar consumption is just part of a huge transition in world health that is now underway. Many countries, especially developing countries, are facing the consequences of huge changes in lifestyle: modifications in diet, lower levels of physical activity, and increased tobacco use.
Practice balance diet for healthy nutrition.
