Ask Your Doctor - Your General Health Q & A

Q.I often wake up in the morning drenched in sweat. Is something wrong with me?
A. It may just be that your sheets or nightclothes are made of non-absorbent, synthetic materials. You'll be more comfortable in natural fibers such as cotton. For a woman between 35 and 50, sweating primarily at night is a common signal that the menopause is approaching. But night sweating is sometimes associated with infection. If your sweating is a recent change, consult your doctor.
Q. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that my ears feel "full." I am sure my hearing has been getting worse. I am only 27 - is it possible that I could be going deaf?
A. It is more likely that your ears have become blocked by earwax (cerumen). Your doctor will probably investigate this possibility first, before arranging for you to take some hearing tests. If wax is the problem, your doctor may use a syringe and warm water to flush your ears or he or she will instruct you on how to remove it yourself with drops made especially for this purpose.
Q. A month ago I tripped over a bucket and cut my leg below the knee. The cut still hasn't healed. Is there something wrong with my blood? I'm 50.
A. The skin that covers the shinbone is very thin, and cuts in this region heal slowly in middle-aged and older people. Consult your doctor so that the possibility of any circulatory problems can be excluded.
